Speaking at the start of the nominations, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi urged aspiring candidates to ensure they comply with all legal and electoral requirements before presenting themselves for nomination.

“The Electoral Commission appeals to all those coming for nomination to make sure that they have read and fulfilled all the requirements and guidelines for nomination as a Member of Parliament,” Mucunguzi said.

According to the Commission, candidates must be Ugandan citizens, registered voters and possess academic qualifications equivalent to the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or Senior Six level.

Mucunguzi said candidates sponsored by political parties are required to present documentation confirming that they are the officially endorsed flag bearers of their respective parties.

“They must also demonstrate that their political parties have nominated them as flag bearers and provide proof that they have paid the non-refundable nomination fee of Shs3 million,” he said.

The Commission also called on candidates and their supporters to maintain peace throughout the electoral process.

“We urge all those participating in the election to conduct themselves peacefully and observe all electoral laws so that the exercise is conducted in an atmosphere of peace and harmony,” Mucunguzi said.

The by-election was occasioned by the death of former Kalangala District Woman MP, Hellen Nakimuli, on April 19, 2026. Nakimuli, who was elected on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket in 2021, died at the age of 41.

Voters in the island district will go to the polls on June 24 to elect a new Woman Member of Parliament.
